Serving Those Who Served: FSW Achieves Military Friendly® School Status
Florida SouthWestern State College (FSW) continues to strengthen its reputation as one of Southwest Florida’s most veteran-friendly colleges, providing military-affiliated students with the resources, support, and community needed to succeed in higher education and beyond.
Recognized as a Military Friendly® School and Southwest Florida’s first Purple Heart State College, FSW has built a campus culture that supports veterans, active-duty service members, military spouses, and dependents from enrollment through graduation.
“Florida SouthWestern State College stands out in supporting veteran students because it goes beyond simply processing GI Bill benefits and focuses on helping veterans successfully transition from military life to college life,” said Steven Felter, Director of Veteran Services at FSW.
FSW’s Office of Veteran Services offers personalized assistance with VA education benefits, admissions, tuition assistance, and academic support. Staff members serve as School Certifying Officials and help students navigate programs such as the Post-9/11 GI Bill®, Montgomery GI Bill®, and Veteran Readiness and Employment (VR&E).
Beyond administrative support, FSW creates opportunities for military-connected students to build lasting relationships and find a sense of belonging on campus. Through organizations such as TASC, veterans, active-duty service members, military spouses, and dependents connect with peers who understand the unique challenges and experiences of military life.
Felter said dedicated veteran resources play an important role in helping students transition successfully to college.
“Veteran-specific resources provide assistance with VA education benefits, academic advising, career planning, and connections to other student veterans who share similar experiences,” Felter said. “These services can reduce stress, create a sense of community, and help veterans feel supported and understood on campus.”
FSW’s commitment to serving veterans extends beyond the classroom. Veteran-focused initiatives include Green Zone training for faculty and staff, mentorship opportunities, dedicated veteran parking, and an expanding Veteran Services Center designed to foster connection and support.
The impact of these efforts can be seen in the success of FSW’s military-affiliated students.
“Our Veteran Services Center has provided a space for veterans and dependents to meet, network, and help each other,” Felter said. “Because of this, students have created not only meaningful connections but also mentorship. As a result, military students are often better equipped to navigate college, complete their degrees, and successfully transition into the workforce or advanced education opportunities.”
As FSW continues to expand services and resources for military-connected students, the college remains committed to honoring the service and sacrifice of veterans while helping them achieve their educational and career goals.
