Forty-Four New Fire Responders Emerge Triumphantly Through the Fire Fighter Program

2 min readMay 13, 2025

At the start of the spring semester, students in FSW’s Fire Fighter program took on the ultimate test of their training — the state practical exam. Forty-four of the program’s students passed the exam, earning praise from state proctors for their professionalism, preparedness, and teamwork. This class marks the largest graduating class to date.

Cassie Billian, director of emergency services at FSW, reflected on what this milestone means to the program.

“We succeed daily in the firefighter program because together — students, instructors, and so many layers of FSW staff — we uphold more than a program. We build an expectation of excellent service, integrity, and brotherhood and sisterhood. Seeing our students and institution thrive in that environment…that’s everything to me. Immeasurable.”

FSW students train at the North Collier Fire Training Center in Naples, where they gain hands-on experience in realistic fire scenarios and emergency response. With rigorous instruction, mentorship and peer support, they are equipped to not only meet the demands of the field but exceed them.

“Those who choose this path are inspired to serve others during emergencies, disasters, and unimaginable hardship,” Billian added. “It takes a rare combination of grit, compassion, resilience, and teamwork to enter and succeed in the profession.”

Becoming a firefighter is no easy feat, but this success proves what’s possible with determination and a strong support system. As they prepare to step into service roles, these graduates carry forward the values and strengths instilled by their time at FSW.
