Brenda Shave: Shining at FSW Online as a Student and Success Coach

Meet Brenda Shave, FSW Online Student Success Coach and FSW Online student who’s showing us all how it’s done! As a single mother of a 2-and-a-half-year-old, Brenda didn’t go to college right after high school, but online learning has given her the flexibility to pursue her dreams.

Balancing life as a student and a professional, Brenda began working as a work-study in FSW’s online department, giving her a unique perspective of the challenges that come with online learning.

“As a work-study, I got to see behind the curtain, and it gave me a greater understanding of what online students face,” she said. “I saw different perspectives, both as a student and a professional, and I was able to see that I was not the only one who struggled. Most importantly, I was able to connect students to resources like FSW’s CARE Services and mental health support.”

As an online student, Brenda is able to maintain a flexible schedule for life’s unexpected moments. She’s also seen firsthand how online students build communities through platforms like Discord or by setting up virtual study spaces.

“Online students have to be brave,” she said. “If you’re struggling, put yourself out there — start a study group, and you’ll find others who are going through the same thing.”
