Affordable Education at FSW: Exploring Work-Study Opportunities

--

At Florida SouthWestern State College (FSW), affordability is not just a priority — it’s a mission. One of the key ways we help students manage the cost of education is through our Federal Work-Study (FWS) program. This federally funded initiative provides students with part-time employment opportunities on campus, enabling them to earn an income while gaining valuable work experience.

What is Work-Study?

Work-study positions are available across a wide range of departments at FSW, giving students the opportunity to contribute to the day-to-day operations of the college. Depending on the assigned department, typical tasks may include answering phones, greeting visitors, scanning documents, filing, assisting with special events, operating office machinery, and basic computer work. These tasks not only help students develop essential technical and professional skills, but also provide the opportunity to cultivate excellent customer service abilities, foster teamwork, and practice creative and critical thinking.

Why Choose Work-Study?

Students in the work-study program are essential to FSW’s success, as their contributions support the overall mission of the college. In return, students benefit from an income that helps offset educational costs, all while gaining hands-on experience in a professional setting. This program also emphasizes the development of a positive work environment, promoting a collaborative and growth-oriented culture.

In addition, the work-study program is designed to help students transition into the workforce. The knowledge and skills gained through these positions — such as customer service, communication, and critical thinking — provide a strong foundation for future career success.

Program Details

The work-study program is available to students who demonstrate financial need through their FAFSA application. Here’s what you need to know:

  • Part-time, on-campus jobs with a maximum of 20 hours per week.
  • An hourly wage of $12.00.
  • Students must be enrolled in at least 6 credits, maintain a GPA of 2.0 or higher, and meet Satisfactory Academic Progress.
  • Students can earn up to the total of their work-study award for the academic year.
  • Work-study positions are awarded on a first-come, first-served basis, and receiving a work-study award does not guarantee employment.

How to Apply

If you’re interested in a work-study position, the first step is to complete the FAFSA each year to determine eligibility. You can then apply for available “Student Assistant/Work Study” positions by visiting FSW’s job portal.

By participating in the FWS program, students at FSW can gain invaluable work experience while keeping their educational expenses manageable. With affordability as a central focus, FSW ensures that students have the tools and resources needed to succeed — both in the classroom and beyond.
